Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at Saint Joseph’s offers a variety of services and therapies designed to evaluate and treat problems affecting movement and function. Whether you have been injured in an accident or suffered a sports injury, our experienced therapists can give you the expert care you need to heal and resume your normal activities.

These services are offered to inpatients in the hospital and outpatients at the medical center. For those who do not require inpatient treatment, but need rehabilitation, we provide outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language/swallowing therapy.

Some of the most common diagnoses we treat on an outpatient basis include: amputations, arthritis, cardiac disease, chronic pain, foot and ankle pain, herniated discs, muscular, orthopedic impairments, Parkinson’s disease and stroke.

Conditions Treated

Physical and occupational therapists are part of a highly skilled team of health care professionals at Saint Joseph’s who help patients with conditions and illnesses such as the following:

Arthritis: treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid conditions and osteoporosis
Hand Injuries: treatment of fractures, sprains, arthritic conditions, carpal tunnel and splint fabrication
Joint Replacement: people who have had knee or hip replacement benefit from therapy that begins in the hospital and continues with short-term rehab in our nursing home, then in a community setting to help them to regain maximum mobility and function.
Musculoskeletal Pain: treatment of low back pain, neck pain, shoulder, foot, elbow, knee, hip and ankle ailments
Neurological Disorders: conditions such as multiple sclerosis, stroke and Parkinson’s disease
Prosthetic/Orthotic Evaluation and Treatment: full rehabilitation services for amputees and other conditions
Swallowing Problems (Dysphagia): evaluations are performed either clinically or by using Saint Joseph’s state-of-the-art videofluoroscopy suite

Our Rehabilitation Team

Depending on the condition and needs, the patient will meet some or all of the following members of our team:

Physical Therapist
Physical therapists help patients to improvement mobility and balance, restore functional movement, relieve pain and increase independence.

Occupational Therapist
Occupational therapists help patients with musculoskeletal conditions to return to their daily tasks and activities with greater independence and mobility. Our occupational therapist are specialists in upper extremity impairments.

Speech Language Pathologist
Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat problems a patient may have understanding and using language or speaking clearly, smoothly and with adequate volume. These specialists also identify and help manage swallowing problems (dysphagia). Swallowing evaluations can be performed either clinically or by using videofluoroscopy. Saint Joseph’s videofluoroscopy suite provides state-of-the-art imaging for swallowing problems of the mouth or throat.

What Should I Bring to My First Visit?

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to review your information. Please bring:

Written physician prescription that is dated within 90 days of your appointment
Current insurance card
List of prescription and over-the-counter drugs you take currently
Your appointment book for scheduling therapy sessions

If you are seeing the physician, please bring any imaging studies that have been done (x-rays, MRIs, etc.)

NOTE: Please bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for all therapy appointments.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

Your initial evaluation will take about an hour. Swallowing evaluations will take longer. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, we may check your range of motion, strength, balance, gait, daily functional ability and assess any pain you may be feeling.

The Treatment Plan

Your therapists will evaluate your individual problems and concerns. Together, you will develop a plan of care for your ongoing therapy. Whether you will be treated on your first visit depends on the type of problem(s) you are experiencing. Before you leave, you will know what your therapy will involve, how many times you will have to return and when your therapy sessions will take place.
