Biography
Angel Gavilanes is a bilingual LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in New York. He is a graduate of Lehman College with a Master’s degree in Social Work.
He has been active in social services since 2007 beginning with vocational counseling working with people who struggle with substance misuse and formerly incarcerated people. After several years of providing direct care services, he was promoted to manager. Angel has managed various programs including youth empowerment and leadership and workforce development for unhoused individuals utilizing evidence-based practices.
Though he enjoyed these roles, Angel’s passion was clinical work. During his social work internship he provided mental health counseling to people with severe mental illness. He also provided homeless families with mental health counseling, educational and employment support and other housing supporting services while working at a shelter.
In 2020, Angel provided psychotherapy services at Bronx Care Hospital, treating individuals with serious mental illness. Since 2021, Angel has provided psychotherapy services at St. Vincent’s Outpatient Clinic with a focus on treating adults with serious mental illness. Angel utilizes evidence based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Informed Care, all with a strengths-based approach. Angel effectively treats depression, trauma, and anxiety. He also works with individuals on anger management, relationships, stress management, and life transitions. In 2024, Angel became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
